October is the month for long walks in Istanbul: highs are usually 16–21 °C, the air is clear and the lower sun paints the Historic Peninsula's domes gold. It is one of the best times of year for routes that are exhausting in summer heat, such as Mimar Sinan's mosques and the Byzantine land walls.

October weather: clear days and the first autumn rain
Early October highs are usually 19–22 °C, falling to around 15–18 °C by month's end, with nights of 10–14 °C. The first half is mostly sunny and calm. Rainy days increase in the second half, and in some years the southerly lodos brings the first real storms of the season.
With the sun lower in the sky, the light takes on its warmest tones of the year. Late afternoons are especially rewarding for photographers; our sunset spots guide was made for this month.
Crowds and 29 October
- Crowds: October remains popular, and autumn school breaks in Europe can make some weeks busy, but waits are shorter than in midsummer.
- 29 October: Republic Day is a public holiday, and the afternoon of 28 October is usually a half-day holiday too. Flags go up everywhere and ceremonies are held; in some years there are evening light shows and fireworks over the Bosphorus.
- Pro: The cool weather makes it comfortable to walk 15–20 km in a day.
- Con: The weather gets more changeable late in the month, so schedule outdoor routes in the first half if you can.
What to wear
A T-shirt with a cardigan or light sweatshirt by day, plus a light windproof jacket for evenings. Add a compact umbrella in the second half of the month. If you plan to walk the city walls, wear sturdy shoes with good ankle support, as the ground is uneven in places.
October's cooler weather makes mosque visits easy: long trousers or a long skirt and long sleeves are already seasonal. Women can use the scarf they wear around their neck as a head covering inside.
Things to do: the season for Sinan and the walls
Visiting Mimar Sinan's works one after another takes patience and cool weather, and October offers both. The Süleymaniye Mosque complex, the İznik-tiled Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque right by our hotel show the master's genius at very different scales. For the full route, see our Mimar Sinan guide.
October is also ideal for walking the Theodosian land walls. A route starting in Yedikule and Samatya and heading north traces Byzantium and the 1453 siege step by step. Seasonal flavours include roasted chestnuts, pomegranates, candied quince and the Bosphorus's autumn fish.
Two October plans
Both are walking days. The first starts on foot from the hotel; for the second, rail lines such as the T1 tram and Marmaray help you reach the southern end of the walls.
- Sinan day, morning: Start at the Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque, take the tram to Eminönü and find the Rüstem Pasha Mosque hidden above the market lanes.
- Sinan day, afternoon: Climb to the Süleymaniye complex, visit the Şehzade Mosque, Sinan's first great imperial mosque, and return to Süleymaniye for sunset.
- Walls day, morning: The seven-towered Byzantine-Ottoman fortress of Yedikule, then head north along the Theodosian Land Walls, walking or using short transport hops.
- Walls day, afternoon: The Tekfur Palace Museum, a surviving Byzantine palace, and the Kariye (Chora) Mosque with its famous mosaics; check its visiting arrangements and prayer times beforehand.
