Sunset spots in Istanbul: from the Golden Horn to the Marmara

Sunset in Istanbul is the moment when domes and minarets turn into silhouettes against an orange sky and the evening call to prayer drifts across the water. Because the city faces two continents and three bodies of water, you can watch the same sunset from dozens of angles. Here are our favourite viewpoints, from the Old City to the Asian shore, with how to get there and a few tips.

Planning your sunset

Sunset time varies a lot by season: late in summer, early in winter. Check a weather app on the day and arrive at least half an hour early; the richest colours often come in the minutes after the sun has gone down.

The direction shifts too. In summer the sun sets further to the northwest, towards the Golden Horn; in winter it moves southwest, over the Sea of Marmara. That is why some spots shine in summer and others in winter.

1. Galata Bridge: the Süleymaniye skyline

The Galata Bridge offers the city's classic sunset view. From the Karaköy end, the domes of the New Mosque and Süleymaniye become silhouettes against a red sky, framed by anglers along the railings, ferries pulling into the piers and wheeling gulls.

At the evening call to prayer, voices from dozens of mosques overlap above the water, a moment that sums up Istanbul.

2. Pierre Loti Hill: above the Golden Horn

Named after the French writer who fell in love with this view, Pierre Loti Hill looks down the full curve of the Golden Horn. As the sun goes down the water changes colour, then the lights along the shore come on one by one. Take the cable car from Eyüp or walk up through the historic cemetery. Visiting Eyüp Sultan Mosque first and then heading up the hill makes a lovely half day.

3. Çamlıca Hill: the city at your feet

One of the highest points on the Asian side, Çamlıca Hill takes in the Bosphorus bridges, the Old City and the Marmara in one sweep. As the sun sets over the European side, the city spreads out below like a carpet. You can pray maghrib at the neighbouring Grand Çamlıca Mosque and end the day with the view. Bring a light jacket, as it can be windy.

4. Salacak: the Maiden's Tower and the Old City

One of Istanbul's most iconic sunset pictures is taken from the Salacak shore in Üsküdar: the Maiden's Tower in front, and behind it the silhouettes of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace against a burning sky. There are steps to sit on along the waterfront and places to get a glass of tea.

Take a ferry from Eminönü or the Marmaray from Sirkeci to Üsküdar, then stroll south along the shore. The ferry ride itself is half the fun; see our ferry guide.

5. The Süleymaniye terrace

The terrace behind Süleymaniye Mosque looks over the Golden Horn, Galata and the mouth of the Bosphorus, and costs nothing. Watching the sunset in the shadow of Sinan's masterpiece is unforgettable. Sunset coincides with the maghrib prayer, so keep your voice down in the courtyard and never walk in front of people praying.

6. Moda seafront: the Old City from across the water

Moda seafront in Kadıköy faces west towards the Old City. Families picnic on the grass, joggers pass by and people sit on the rocks to see the sun off; lively yet relaxed. Take a ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadıköy and walk along the shore. The ride back towards the illuminated peninsula after dark is a treat of its own.

7. The Kennedy Avenue seafront, just below the hotel

If you would rather stay close, the Kennedy Avenue seafront promenade is a few minutes downhill from our hotel. It faces the Marmara, and in winter, when the sun swings southwest, it sets straight over the sea. As the lights of ships waiting to enter the Bosphorus come on, walk along the Byzantine sea walls towards the Ahırkapı Lighthouse.

8. Our rooftop terrace

After a long day out, the easiest option of all is Sareban Hotel's sea-view rooftop terrace, where guests love to watch ships on the Marmara as the sky changes colour.

Practical sunset tips

  • Clouds do not always spoil a sunset; broken cloud often gives the most colourful skies.
  • Hilltops are breezy, so bring an extra layer.
  • For spots on the Asian side, plan your return transport in advance.
  • To watch the sunset from the water, consider an evening cruise; see our Bosphorus tour guide.
  • For ideas on what to do once the sun has gone down, read our guide to evenings in the Old City.
