Istanbul's main intercity bus terminal, the Büyük İstanbul Otogarı in Esenler, lies roughly 12–15 km west of Sultanahmet. The easiest public transport route is the M1 metro from inside the terminal to Aksaray, then a short walk to the Yusufpaşa stop for the T1 tram; the whole trip usually takes 40–50 minutes. A taxi reaches the hotel door in about 25–45 minutes depending on traffic.

What to know about the otogar

Most long-distance coaches arrive at the Esenler terminal, locally called the otogar. It is a large, multi-level building where bus platforms, company ticket offices and waiting areas are spread across different floors. Follow the metro signs after you get off the coach and you can reach the metro station without leaving the building.

At busy times, people may approach passengers offering taxis or shuttle rides. Using the official taxi rank or a ride-hailing app is the easiest way to avoid price surprises. For more general precautions, see our safe travel tips.

Step by step with the M1 metro and T1 tram

This route is unaffected by traffic and involves just one change. If you do not have a card yet, you can buy or top up an Istanbulkart at the station machines; our Istanbulkart guide explains how it works. Check the official apps for any service changes before you set off.

  1. Follow the signs inside the terminal down to the M1 metro station (Otogar station).
  2. Board a train towards Yenikapı; Aksaray is a few stops down the line.
  3. Get off at Aksaray and follow the exit signs to the Yusufpaşa stop on the T1 tram line, a few minutes' walk away.
  4. Take the T1 towards Kabataş. The tram passes Aksaray, Laleli-Üniversite and Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı.
  5. Get off at Çemberlitaş or the following stop, Sultanahmet. From either, the hotel is about an 8–10 minute walk, mostly downhill.

What you will pass on the tram

The short tram ride from Yusufpaşa to Sultanahmet doubles as a mini introduction to the old city. Near Laleli-Üniversite stands the baroque Laleli Mosque; at Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı, the Beyazıt Mosque and the famous Grand Bazaar are right beside the tracks. Çemberlitaş takes its name from the Column of Constantine, a Roman monument dating from the 4th century.

Our T1 tram guide describes every key stop on the line and what to see around it.

By taxi from the terminal

With plenty of luggage or a late arrival, a taxi is the practical choice. The ride from the otogar to Küçük Ayasofya usually takes 25–45 minutes, longer during morning and evening rush hours. Check that the meter is running and show the driver the hotel pin on your phone.

If the driver takes the coastal road along the Sea of Marmara, you will approach our neighbourhood from below, via Kadırga, which is often smoother than cutting through the inner lanes of the old city. Our street is narrow, so you may need to guide the driver for the last few hundred metres.

The final stretch: from the tram to the hotel

The hotel is on Cinci Meydanı Sokak in the Küçük Ayasofya neighbourhood. The walk from the tram is short but sloping, along narrow and partly cobbled lanes. With heavy bags, a short taxi from the stop may be easier.

  1. From Çemberlitaş, walk past the column and follow the lanes heading south, downhill towards the sea, into Kadırga and Küçük Ayasofya.
  2. From Sultanahmet, walk south along Sultanahmet Square and head downhill from its far end.
  3. On either route, the Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Mosque and Little Hagia Sophia are good landmarks; the hotel is very close to both.
  4. If you get stuck, message us on WhatsApp (+90 534 336 00 46) and we will send you the location right away.
