Getting from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Sultanahmet: transfer, taxi, Havaist bus and metro

Istanbul Airport (IST) lies roughly 50 km by road from Sultanahmet, and the drive usually takes between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on traffic. A pre-arranged transfer or a taxi is the least stressful way in; the Havaist airport buses and the M11 metro with rail connections are cheaper but take more effort. Whichever you choose, the last stretch runs through the narrow, cobbled lanes of Küçük Ayasofya, so plan for your luggage.

Which option suits you? A quick comparison

The airport sits far to the north near the Black Sea coast, while the historic peninsula is in the south on the Sea of Marmara. None of the options is short, so the right choice depends on your arrival time, how much luggage you carry and how many of you are travelling.

  • Hotel transfer: The easiest option for late-night arrivals, families with young children and anyone with several suitcases; you are dropped at the door.
  • Taxi: Door to door and flexible, but you need to keep an eye on traffic and the meter.
  • Havaist bus: Comfortable, with a luggage hold and a modest fare; it brings you close to the old city, but you will need a tram ride or a short taxi for the last part.
  • M11 metro plus connections: Immune to traffic but involves at least two changes; best for light packers who are comfortable with public transport.

Our airport transfer: the fewest surprises

For guests staying with us, we arrange a paid airport transfer on request. After a long flight, it saves you from changing money, negotiating with drivers or dragging bags through metro stations. We particularly recommend it for arrivals close to midnight and for families travelling with small children.

The price and meeting details are confirmed over WhatsApp. You can read more on our airport transfer page.

  1. Send your flight number, arrival date and the number of passengers and bags to us on WhatsApp (+90 534 336 00 46).
  2. Save the meeting details from our confirmation message on your phone.
  3. After passport control and baggage claim, head to the agreed point in the arrivals hall; if your flight is delayed, just let us know.
  4. The car takes you straight to the hotel entrance, and our 24-hour reception is ready for you however late you land.

By taxi: timing, fares and what to watch for

Official taxi ranks are clearly signposted outside the arrivals level. In the early morning the ride can take around 45 minutes; on a weekday evening it can easily exceed 1.5 hours. Istanbul taxis come in different colours that correspond to different fare classes, so check which kind you are getting into.

The meter should be switched on at the start of the ride, and bridge or motorway tolls may be added to the fare. Ride-hailing apps are also widely used at the airport and show an estimated price before you book.

  • Ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a taxi; use the official rank.
  • Give the address as “Küçük Ayasofya, Cinci Meydanı Sokak”. Most drivers know Sultanahmet Square, but the hotel street is narrow and they may need directions for the final turns.
  • The simplest trick is to save our pin on your map app and show it to the driver; you will find it on our location page.

By Havaist bus to the historic peninsula

Havaist is the airport bus service linking IST with different parts of the city. One of its routes heads for the historic peninsula, serving the Aksaray and Sultanahmet area. Buses have a luggage hold and payment is usually by Istanbulkart or contactless bank card. Route numbers and stops change from time to time, so confirm your bus on the terminal signs and in the official app rather than relying on older blog posts.

  1. From the arrivals level, follow the signs to the Havaist bus platforms.
  2. Check with staff or the screens which bus goes towards the historic peninsula / Sultanahmet.
  3. The ride usually takes around 1.5 hours; stay on until the stop closest to Sultanahmet.
  4. Depending on where you get off, take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet or Çemberlitaş, or grab a short taxi to the hotel door.

By M11 metro and rail connections

The M11 line connects the airport with Gayrettepe, where it joins the city metro network. Its big advantage is that traffic jams do not affect it, but reaching Sultanahmet takes more than one change. The airport line may be priced differently from regular city lines; our Istanbulkart guide explains how the card works.

The route below is a general outline. Connections and interchange arrangements can change, so check a current journey planner before you set off.

  1. Board the M11 at the station beneath the terminal, heading for Gayrettepe, and change there to the M2 metro.
  2. Ride the M2 towards Yenikapı. Option 1: get off at Vezneciler and walk a few minutes to the Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı or Laleli-Üniversite stop on the T1 tram line.
  3. Option 2: continue to Yenikapı and take the Marmaray to Sirkeci, then pick up the T1 tram near Sirkeci Station.
  4. Ride the T1 to Sultanahmet or Çemberlitaş. Including changes, the trip usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours; our T1 tram guide shows what lies along the line.

The final stretch: from the tram stop to the hotel

The hotel is in the quiet Küçük Ayasofya neighbourhood, a few lanes from Little Hagia Sophia. The nearest T1 stops are Sultanahmet and Çemberlitaş, both about an 8–10 minute walk, mostly downhill. The streets are narrow, sloping and partly cobbled, which is charming on foot but hard work with heavy suitcases. If you are carrying a lot, a short taxi from the tram stop to the door is well worth it.

  1. Get off at Sultanahmet; the small Firuz Ağa Mosque is right beside the stop.
  2. Walk south along Sultanahmet Square (the Hippodrome) towards the Sea of Marmara.
  3. From the end of the square, head downhill past the Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Mosque into Küçük Ayasofya.
  4. If you cannot spot Cinci Meydanı Sokak, message us on WhatsApp and we will guide you in real time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet?

Outside rush hour, a taxi or private transfer is usually quickest, at around 45–60 minutes. At peak times the M11 metro route can be more predictable because it is not affected by road traffic.

Is there public transport if I land late at night?

Some Havaist routes may run at night, though less frequently, and night metro service varies. For late arrivals, our hotel transfer or a taxi from the official rank is the safest choice.

Can a taxi drop me right at the hotel?

Yes, cars can reach our street, but the lanes are narrow and drivers may need directions. Showing the hotel pin on your phone makes it easy.

Where can I buy an Istanbulkart at the airport?

Ticket machines and sales points in the terminal sell the card. Once you have it, you can use it on the metro, tram, Marmaray and ferries.
