Miniatürk is an open-air miniature park on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, where famous buildings from Turkey and the former Ottoman lands are displayed as 1:25 scale models. Opened in 2003, it takes you from Hagia Sophia to Mount Nemrut in a couple of hours. It is a playful, educational break for families with children.

A whole country in an afternoon

When it opened in 2003, Miniatürk was promoted as one of the largest miniature parks in the world. More than a hundred models are spread across landscaped grounds by the water, grouped into Istanbul landmarks, monuments from across Anatolia, and Ottoman-era buildings now beyond Turkey's borders.

Most models are built at 1:25 scale, which brings a mosque down to about waist height and a bridge to a few paces long. Buildings that would take hours to walk around can be taken in at a single glance. Tiny trees and figures, and in places moving trains, ships and vehicles, bring the scenes to life.

Models worth seeking out

  • Istanbul: Compare Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Galata Tower, the Maiden's Tower and Rumeli Fortress with the real buildings you have seen or will see.
  • Anatolia: The Library of Celsus at Ephesus, the colossal heads of Mount Nemrut, Sumela Monastery, the timber houses of Safranbolu and the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, places you may not have time to visit on this trip.
  • Lost wonders: Reconstructions of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • The wider Ottoman world: The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the Old Bridge at Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Moving parts: Hunting for working trains, boats and lights on the models keeps younger visitors busy.

Visiting with children

Paths are flat and wide, so strollers are no problem. Small panels by each model give the building's name, location and a little history. There are play areas and places to rest, as well as spots for food and drink inside the park.

Since the visit is almost entirely outdoors, summer middays can be tiring, so bring hats and water. On a wet day it is better to choose somewhere with more indoor space. Our family guide to Istanbul has more ideas for travelling with kids.

Make a Golden Horn day of it

Miniatürk pairs well with other stops along the Golden Horn. A short way south along the shore in Hasköy, the Rahmi M. Koç Museum makes a good second stop for technology-loving kids. Across the water are the Eyüp Sultan Mosque and, above it, Pierre Loti Hill, which you can easily spot from the park.

It is also useful before or after exploring the Old City: seeing the buttresses of Hagia Sophia or the domes of the Blue Mosque from above helps you understand what you are looking at when you stand in front of the real thing.

Getting there from Sareban Hotel

Miniatürk is not within tram reach of our hotel. The most enjoyable option is the T1 tram to Eminönü, then a Golden Horn ferry to the pier right next to the park. Departures are infrequent, so check the timetable in advance; our ferry guide explains how the routes work.

Buses along the Golden Horn shore road from the Eminönü area and taxis are the alternatives. Our tour desk can help you choose the most practical option for your family; you can reach us via the contact page.

Frequently asked questions
