August is usually Istanbul's hottest month: highs typically reach 28–31 °C, the sea is at its warmest and the city is busy with families on summer holiday. If you are travelling with children, the hands-on museums on the Golden Horn and the shady parks along the Bosphorus will be your best friends.

August weather: the peak of summer
Expect highs of about 28–31 °C and warm nights of 21–23 °C. Humidity is high, and still days can feel heavy. In some years the first cooling showers arrive late in the month, but August is generally dry.
The sea is at its warmest of the year; for swimmers, the beaches of the Princes' Islands and the cool breeze on the Bosphorus are the big draws.
Crowds, holidays and 30 August
- Crowds: School holidays across Europe and the Middle East mean lots of visiting families. Early morning is still the easiest time at the popular museums.
- 30 August: Victory Day is a public holiday marking the 1922 victory of the Great Offensive, with ceremonies and flags on buildings across the city.
- Pro: Days are still long, and late afternoons are ideal for waterfront walks.
- Con: The midday heat is tiring, especially for young children and older travellers, so keep the middle of the day for cool indoor places.
What to wear, kids included
Light, loose, light-coloured clothes; hats, sunscreen and a full water bottle for the children. Wet wipes and a small hand fan are lifesavers in queues. More family preparation tips are in our family guide to Istanbul.
Adults need to cover knees and shoulders in mosques; young children are not held to the same standard, but it is good for teenagers to follow the rule. A thin shawl or long wrap in your bag is easier than wearing trousers all day in the heat.
Things to do: kid-friendly museums and the Bosphorus shore
On the Golden Horn, the Rahmi M. Koç Museum is an industrial museum where children can spend hours around a real submarine, vintage trams, aircraft and steam engines. A little further on, Miniatürk displays scale models of famous buildings from Istanbul and across Anatolia; it is open-air, so go in the morning or late afternoon.
Over in Beşiktaş and Ortaköy, the imperial caiques of the Istanbul Naval Museum, the plane-shaded Yıldız Park and the waterside Ortaköy Mosque make a lovely summer afternoon. Seasonal treats include figs, grapes, melon and watermelon, while ice cream and stuffed baked potatoes are children's favourites. Our street food guide has more ideas.
