June is the first and arguably the most pleasant month of the Istanbul summer: highs are usually around 23–27 °C, the days are the longest of the year and a cool breeze comes off the sea in the evening. A day on the Princes' Islands and sunset walks along the Sea of Marmara are the month's standout experiences.

June weather: warm but not yet oppressive
Typical highs are around 23–27 °C, with nights of 16–19 °C. Rain is rare, apart from the odd brief summer shower. Humidity is lower than in July and August, so walking all day is still comfortable.
These are the longest days of the year, and the sun sets late in the evening. By the end of the month the sea warms up enough for many people to swim.
Crowds and travel notes
- Crowds: High season continues. Turkish schools usually break up in mid to late June, so domestic family visitors increase towards the end of the month.
- Pro: Long days mean museums in the morning, the seaside in the afternoon and an evening stroll all fit easily into one day.
- Con: The midday sun on open squares can be tiring, so plan shade and water breaks.
- Eid al-Adha: It moves about 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar and falls in June in some years. The islands and beaches get busy over the holiday, so check the dates.
What to wear
Loose, light-coloured cotton or linen is ideal. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. The breeze on ferries and along the evening waterfront can feel cool, so a thin cardigan is enough.
Mosque dress codes still apply in summer: a skirt or trousers below the knee and a top that covers the shoulders. A light linen shirt keeps you cool and respectful at the same time, and women should carry a thin scarf.
Things to do: the islands and the Marmara shore
June is one of the nicest months for the Princes' Islands: the July and August crowds have not yet arrived and the pine-scented hills are still green. There is almost no motor traffic, so cycling and walking are the best ways to explore. See our Princes' Islands day-trip guide for piers and routes.
A few minutes downhill from Küçük Ayasofya, the Kennedy Avenue seafront path is perfect for walking or cycling on long June evenings, accompanied by the Byzantine sea walls and the Ahırkapı Lighthouse. Back at the hotel, our sea-view rooftop terrace catches the Marmara breeze as the day ends. Seasonal treats include cherries, strawberries and apricots, with grilled corn on the cob and ice cream from street carts.
Two June plans
The first is a full day on the islands; the second is a slow day and long evening in the quiet neighbourhood of Küçük Ayasofya and Kadırga. For more ideas, see our guide to evenings on the Historic Peninsula.
- Islands day, morning: An early ferry to Heybeliada for quiet lanes and a walk through the pine woods.
- Islands day, afternoon: Hop over to Büyükada, cycle or stroll among the old mansions, then catch a late-afternoon ferry back.
- Neighbourhood day, morning: The Byzantine Little Hagia Sophia and Sinan's elegant Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque.
- Neighbourhood day, evening: Walk down from Kadırga Square to the shore, on to the Ahırkapı Lighthouse, and back for sunset on the rooftop terrace.
Frequently asked questions
Is Istanbul very hot in June?
Usually not. Highs are around 23–27 °C and humidity is lower than in midsummer. Taking breaks in the shade at midday and drinking plenty of water is enough.
Can you swim in June?
By the end of the month the sea is warm enough for many swimmers. Beaches on the Princes' Islands are not yet as crowded as in July and August.
Do I need a full day for the Princes' Islands?
You can see one island in half a day, but we recommend a full day to explore two comfortably. Check return ferry times in advance.
