September is many Istanbulites' favourite month: highs are usually 22–27 °C, the sea is still warm and crowds thin noticeably from mid-month once schools reopen. Museums and galleries launch their new season, and migrating birds stream south over the Bosphorus.

September weather: a taste of summer, a hint of autumn
The first half of September often still feels like summer, with highs of around 25–27 °C. By the end of the month they drop to about 21–23 °C, and nights cool to 15–18 °C. Humidity falls and the air turns clear. In some years the first autumn rains arrive late in the month.
After a whole summer of warming, the sea is still good for swimming, and the weather is once again ideal for long walks across the city.
Crowds and travel conditions
- Pro: Schools in Türkiye and much of Europe usually reopen in the first half of September, so family crowds ease from mid-month.
- Pro: Soft light and clear air make it an excellent month for photography.
- Pro: The Princes' Islands and their beaches are far calmer than in August; our islands day-trip guide helps you enjoy the last weeks of warm sea.
- Con: Cruise season continues, and on days when ships are in port Sultanahmet and Galata can still be busy.
- Note: There is no fixed-date public holiday in September. Islamic holidays move about 11 days earlier each year and can fall in late summer in some years, so check the dates.
What to wear
Summer clothes are fine early in the month; in the second half, add a thin cardigan or light jacket for the evenings. Comfortable shoes are a must for walking days, as Galata's stepped streets will test your knees.
Mosques require covered shoulders and knees; in September's mild weather, a thin long-sleeved shirt with light trousers or a long skirt is ideal. Women should keep a light scarf handy.
Things to do: the art season and bird migration
Autumn brings Istanbul's cultural calendar back to life, with museums and galleries typically opening new exhibitions. In some years an international art biennial is also held in the autumn; dates vary, so check the current programme. It is the perfect month to plan a day in Galata and Karaköy.
September is also the month of a remarkable natural spectacle: storks and birds of prey migrating from Europe to Africa pass over the Bosphorus in great numbers. Büyük Çamlıca Hill is one of the well-known viewing spots, though numbers vary with the wind and the week. In the markets, look for fresh figs, grapes and the first pomegranates.
Two September plans
The first is a day of art and views; the second is a short half-day exploring Galata's historic layers. Galata is easy to reach by taking the T1 tram across the Galata Bridge to Karaköy.
- Art day, morning: Modern and contemporary Turkish art at the waterfront Istanbul Modern.
- Art day, midday: A stroll along Galataport and the Karaköy waterfront with a break by the sea.
- Art day, afternoon: Climb the Camondo Stairs to the Galata Tower, then walk up past the upper station of the historic Tünel funicular towards the Pera Museum.
- Galata half-day: Mevlevi culture at the Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum, then sunset in the side streets around the tower.
Frequently asked questions
Is September a good time to visit Istanbul?
Yes, many consider it one of the best months. The weather is mild, the sea is still warm and crowds are smaller than in midsummer.
Can you swim in Istanbul in September?
Yes, especially in the first half of the month. For swimming, the Princes' Islands are a better choice than the city centre.
Where can I watch bird migration over the Bosphorus?
Büyük Çamlıca Hill is one of the best-known spots. Numbers vary with the wind and the week, so clear days with a northerly breeze give you the best chance.
