Istanbul Modern opened in Karaköy in 2004 as Turkey's first private museum of modern and contemporary art. Since 2023 it has occupied a new building by Renzo Piano inside Galataport, looking straight out over the Bosphorus. It's the place to trace the story of Turkish modern art, catch a photography show and take in sea views between galleries.

From customs warehouse to waterfront landmark

The museum opened at the end of 2004 in a former customs warehouse on the Karaköy quay and soon became one of the city's most visited art institutions. While the Galataport project was under way, the collection spent several years in a temporary home in Beyoğlu, and in spring 2023 the museum moved into a purpose-built building on the site of the old warehouse.

The architect is Renzo Piano, one of the designers of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. With a light-reflecting façade and large windows facing the water, the building seems to be in conversation with the surface of the Bosphorus. Glimpsing the Historic Peninsula and the Üsküdar shore through the windows as you move between rooms is very much part of the experience.

What's on show

  • Turkish modern art: A collection display tracing painting, sculpture and installation in Turkey from the early 20th century to today, the easiest way to follow the art of the Republican era in one place.
  • Photography: Istanbul Modern is known for giving photography its own gallery space, often with documentary work about the city past and present.
  • Temporary exhibitions: Changing shows of artists from Turkey and around the world.
  • Cinema and library: Film screenings and an art library; programmes change through the year.
  • Views: Glass walls facing the sea put art and cityscape in the same frame.

Visiting with children

The museum runs well-regarded workshops and learning programmes for children and teenagers, and family workshops are sometimes held at weekends and during school holidays. Content and booking rules change, so check the museum's current listings before you go.

Contemporary art can feel abstract to young children, so give them a mission: find their favourite colour, or pick a work and give it a new title. The galleries are spacious and a stroller is usually no problem. For more ideas, see our guide to Istanbul with kids, and our rainy-day suggestions if the weather turns.

Planning your visit

Allow at least an hour and a half to two hours for the collection and temporary shows. The museum may close one day a week, so check current opening days and ticket options on its official website. Large bags may need to be left at the cloakroom, and although photography is allowed in most galleries, some temporary exhibitions restrict it.

Right outside are the Baroque façade of Nusretiye Mosque and the Tophane Clock Tower, an interesting contrast after an hour of contemporary art. The museum also pairs naturally with a stroll along the Galataport promenade.

Getting there from Sareban Hotel

From the Sultanahmet or Çemberlitaş stop near our hotel in Küçük Ayasofya, take the T1 tram towards Kabataş, cross the Galata Bridge and get off at Tophane. The museum is on the sea side of the stop, inside Galataport; head for the clock tower and follow the signs.

Afterwards you can continue by tram to Kabataş and visit Dolmabahçe Palace, or walk to Karaköy, ride the Tünel funicular up to Beyoğlu and add the Pera Museum to the same day.
