For many travellers, May is the best month to see Istanbul: highs are usually 18–23 °C, rain is scarce and the Bosphorus hillsides turn purple with Judas tree blossom. High season is starting, so crowds grow; booking ahead and starting each day early are the secrets to enjoying it.

May weather: the most balanced weeks of the year

Typical highs are about 18–23 °C, with nights of 12–15 °C. Sunny days dominate; brief showers can still happen, but most days are spent outdoors. The midday sun is noticeable but not yet oppressive.

The sea is warming, though still cool for most swimmers. Evenings bring a light breeze, perfect for eating outside and waterfront walks.

National days and commemorations

  • 1 May: Labour and Solidarity Day is a public holiday. Expect security measures and possible transport changes around Taksim; plans on the Historic Peninsula are more relaxed that day.
  • 19 May: Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day is a public holiday, marked by youth performances in stadiums and squares.
  • 29 May: The anniversary of the 1453 Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. It is not a public holiday, but commemorative events are generally held around the land walls and the Fatih district; the programme varies each year.
  • Eid al-Adha: Kurban Bayramı moves about 11 days earlier each year and falls in May or June in some years. The four-day holiday makes the city's roads and transport busier, so check the dates for your trip.

Crowds and planning ahead

May marks the start of high season. Long weekends and cruise-ship days make the Sultanahmet Square area busy. Visit the big museums first thing in the morning and save the middle of the day for lesser-known sights. If you are planning your stay, our booking page has the details.

May is also the Bosphorus at its most colourful: Judas trees usually paint the slopes pink and purple from late April to mid-May. The best way to see them is simply to ride a public ferry up the strait; our ferry guide explains the routes and piers.

What to wear

Light, breathable clothes for the day and a thin cardigan or jacket for the evening. Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen now belong in your bag every day. For long outdoor walks such as the city walls, wear shoes with a solid sole.

For mosques, light trousers or a long skirt that covers the knees and a top that covers the shoulders are ideal. A light cotton scarf shields you from the sun and doubles as a head covering.

Two themed days for May

The first follows the spirit of the conquest anniversary along the land walls and Edirnekapı; the second heads for the Asian side's hills in Judas tree season.

  1. Conquest day, morning: The Panorama 1453 History Museum, which recreates the siege in a 360-degree painting.
  2. Conquest day, midday: A short walk along the Theodosian Land Walls and Sinan's light-filled Mihrimah Sultan Mosque at Edirnekapı.
  3. Conquest day, afternoon: The Fatih Mosque, where Sultan Mehmed II is buried, and the lively market streets around it.
  4. Asian side day: Ferry to Üsküdar, then the waterside Beylerbeyi Palace; in the afternoon, the panorama from Büyük Çamlıca Hill and the vast Çamlıca Mosque.
