April is tulip month in Istanbul: daytime highs usually reach 13–18 °C, parks and roadside beds burst with colour, and the city's tulip festival is held in April in most years. It is mild, walkable weather, but visitor numbers climb noticeably in the second half of the month.

April weather: mild days, cool evenings

Expect highs of roughly 13–18 °C and nights around 7–10 °C. Rain eases off, though short spring showers still pass through. On sunny days the midday hours can be T-shirt warm, but evenings, and especially ferry decks, cool down quickly.

The sea is still too cold for swimming; this month the Bosphorus is about greening shores and blossom rather than beaches.

Tulip season: where and when

The tulip holds a special place in Ottoman art and in Istanbul's identity. The municipality plants millions of bulbs, and they usually peak from early to mid-April, although a warm or cold spring can shift that by a week or two. The Istanbul Tulip Festival generally takes place in April; programmes and dates change from year to year, so check current announcements.

The grandest display is at Emirgan Park, with its historic pavilions and terraced gardens above the Bosphorus. Much closer to our hotel, Gülhane Park and the area around Sultanahmet Square are also planted with tulip beds. Towards the end of the month, the pink-purple blossom of Judas trees starts to appear on the Bosphorus hillsides.

Crowds, national days and things to know

  • 23 April: National Sovereignty and Children's Day is a public holiday, with children's performances, flags and festivities in schools and squares. A lovely day to be in the city with kids.
  • Crowds: In some years Easter falls in April and brings more European visitors. Emirgan gets very busy on tulip weekends, so go on a weekday morning if you can.
  • Pro: The weather is among the best of the year for long walks and waterside routes.
  • Religious holidays: Islamic holidays shift about 11 days earlier every year and can fall in spring in some years, so check the dates.

What to wear

A light sweater or cardigan with a thin jacket on top is usually enough during the day; add another layer for an evening ferry. Keep sunglasses and a compact umbrella in the same bag. Comfortable trainers are ideal for Emirgan's sloping paths and long strolls along the Bosphorus.

As it warms up, short sleeves are tempting, so carry a light cardigan or shawl to cover your shoulders when entering mosques. A light scarf is all women need for a head covering.

Two April plans

The first catches peak tulips on the Bosphorus; the second is a short-distance family day around Sultanahmet, perfect for 23 April. Travelling with children? See our family guide to Istanbul and our family-friendly hotel facilities.

  1. Tulip day, morning: Head out early to the Bosphorus villages and see Emirgan Park's tulip beds and pavilions before the crowds arrive.
  2. Tulip day, midday: Calligraphy and temporary exhibitions at the nearby Sakıp Sabancı Museum.
  3. Tulip day, afternoon: Walk along the shore to Rumeli Fortress, then tea and Bosphorus views on the Bebek waterfront.
  4. Family day: Tulips in Gülhane Park in the morning, the kid-pleasing Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam at midday, and the holiday atmosphere on the Hippodrome in the late afternoon.
